MASS HANDLING - business

Environmentally friendly solution for the reception of contaminated masses

Approved reception facility for contaminated masses in Bergen

Our site is an approved reception facility for slightly contaminated material (levels 1–5), which means mass that is polluted, but not defined as hazardous waste.

Chapter 2 of the Pollution Control Act stipulates a requirement that if there is reason to believe that there may be contamination on a site, this automatically triggers a requirement that an environmental site assessment must be performed. If the assessment shows that the soil is contaminated beyond normal values stated in the Pollution Regulations, an action plan must be drawn up. Depending on the degree of contamination, the plan will address which soil can be reused on the site, and which soil must be delivered to an approved reception facility.

All surplus soil which is removed from the site is defined as industrial waste, and must be delivered to an approved reception facility.

The delivery of contaminated material for business customers and major projects costs NOK 440 (excluding VAT) per tonne for levels 1, 2 and 3. For levels 4 and 5, we need an analysis from the industrial site to provide an estimate. A more environmentally-friendly solution than landfill

Envir is a uniquely positioned industrial partner which, through the sustainable treatment and recirculation of large volumes of problematic waste material, transforms these into usable construction materials. Our vision is to redefine the way the construction industry handles the material it removes, in order to provide our clients with really circular, profitable and risk-free solutions.

Envir’s solution is an alternative that improves the accounts of building and construction projects, from the perspective of greenhouse gas emissions, use of resources and costs. This is documentable, and can be implemented in CEEQUAL and other tools that are used to document the environmental performance of civil engineering projects.

When your project is finished, we will give you the necessary documentation so that our environmentally-friendly solution can be counted in your final result, and thus contribute towards the CEEQUAL assessment.

Explanation of our simple five step service for business customers:

STEP 1: We send an action plan describing the volume and degree of contamination before startup, to ensure that you get the right price and the right downstream solution.

STEP 2: We draw up an agreement is before the first delivery.

STEP 3: We sort and treat the material we receive in accordance with legislation, and offer it for reuse.

STEP 4: Our project manager submits weekly reports (coming soon): Online client portal for real-time updates at times that suit you).

STEP 5: We send a final report with a summary of what we received during the project.

Cut transport costs and emissions

Envir AS is centrally located in Laksevåg. That makes it easy to plan the removal of material in Bergen and the surrounding area, and keeps both transport costs and emissions down at the same time.

Reuse of soil and stone for construction projects

In accordance with our permit issued by the County Governor of Vestland, we can separate stones bigger than 20 mm, which with an adhesion of < 5% are defined as clean and can therefore be reused in building and construction projects.

The method we use to treat slightly contaminated mass, by separating out reusable elements from other material which must be disposed of, also helps towards achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and more circular materials management.

How is reusing stone an environmentally friendly solution?

Soil and stone are not renewable resources. Extracting new stone from stone quarries and creating landfill sites for the disposal of unusable materials results in the large-scale destruction of the natural environment. By separating fully usable stone for reuse from the contaminated material, we reduce the need to encroach on natural land, which means that together we can achieve the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

Why deliver contaminated material to Envir?

Envir AS is a future-oriented waste management facility at Laksevåg in Bergen, and our goal is to look after resources through safe, environmentally friendly and circular materials management.

When you deliver contaminated masses to us at Envir, we take on the responsibility of classifying the waste before we sign an agreement, we draw up an action plan on how to treat the contaminated soil, and we weigh the material.

We sift out large stones and crushed rock, while we store gravel, sand and soil before sending it by ship to Denmark, where it will be used in a land reclamation project.

You can see an illustration of our materials management process below, and the process is this simple:
